BACKPACKER & STEWARDESS WANNABE - PART 1

22nd June (Thurs)
Backpacker me (with my red haversack which has done justice over 4yrs) and stewardess wannabe (with her luggage on rollers), YC, left Changi Airport with much excitement being 1st time tourists in the Island of Thousand Temples.

I finished my pasta on morning flight to Jakarta, thinking this would be my last proper meal. Cos I was loaded with sachets of Campbell Soup and Myojo Cup Noodles. But hey, they served lunch for us after an hr interval in-flight from JKT to Denpasar. Had to force it down my bloated tummy!

Nearing Bali, the stewardess mentioned that Bali time is one hr later than JKT. Gosh, same timing as SG! I have to wake up @ 5.30am for my morning prayers, cos sunrise was 6am! All this while I tot Bali was an hr earlier.

Our tour agent fetched us and when we were reaching the famous (for its waves and 2 bombings in the area) Kuta Beach, we went "wahhh!!!", "oooohhh", "OMG"...for we have never seen such huge waves in Singapore (jakun!). And the best thing is, our hotel, Kuta Seaview Cottage is facing the beach, a small road away! and 2 blocks away from Hard Rock (not that I go there!).

It was so noisy, crowded and busy out in Kuta. But when we entered the hotel, it was so very peaceful. It felt so homely to be in the hotel.

1st stop was the beach. Lotsa people promoting their beaded accessories, temporary airbrush tattoos, manicure/pedicure, foot massage, T-shirts and sarong skirts. Beware: these are not necessarily cheap!I spent SG$2 more for a bangle at the beach than at a shop.

The rest of the day was spent walking down the many streets in Kuta. More of window-shopping and checking out the prices of some stuff.

Tips:
(1) Dun be afraid to bargain, even half the selling price. It's not ridiculous :p
(2) Ladies, dun walk alone. The guys can be cheeky at times, or rather most of the time.
(3) Be prepared to talk a lot to the sellers. Lotsa questions. When you are hooded gal, they think you are from a) JKT, b) M'sia c) or other parts of Indonesia. Ask question if you are a Muslim (Duh!) They will greet "Assalammualaikum" so just smile (which I did) or pretend you didn't hear or be hostile (which YC did)
(4) Look out for Minang/Padang food outlets for Halal food
(5) No need to be so scared of the Bali dogs. They lead a very slow paced life like the people and rarely bark :p

We managed to find one place selling Padang food. It was delicious like a home-cooked meal back in SG, until YC whispered "Nani...I think I saw something scurrying at the back, with a long tail..." (lucky me..was facing the entrance of the shop) She later confirmed it was a huge rat :p

That place was our first and last Padang food outlet. But nothing happened to our tummies. It's worth a try really...just forget abt the rats!

More pics will be uploaded cos we took over 600 photos!!

to be continued....
